The 2025 Throwleigh Fête enjoyed ideal weather—sunny, but not too hot—which brought a good crowd to the field behind the Village Hall for this much-loved annual event. Families spent the afternoon enjoying traditional activities, including children’s races and the ever-popular egg throwing competition. The views across to Castle Drogo were also spectacular.
This year, the Dartmoor Society was delighted to join in alongside the regular book stall. We hosted a table featuring books about Dartmoor and information about the Society’s work, providing a great opportunity to meet local members and chat with others who share a passion for the moor.
A produce competition returned this year for the first time in several seasons, and we’re pleased to report that Bill Murray took first prize with his courgettes and cherry tomatoes, while Rachel Van der Steen’s sweet peas earned second place.
Proceeds from the fête support the Throwleigh Village Hall—a unique building on Dartmoor. Originally a World War II Nissen hut and once the cinema for the US Army camp at Bridestowe, it was moved to its current site and opened in 1949. Since then, it has been maintained, refurbished, and modernised to continue serving the local community. Events like this play a vital role in keeping it at the heart of village life.
